There is so much that we can appreciate about the life we have been given, despite what challenges may come our way. The love of our family, a great school community, food on the table, our right to express our faith freely… the list could go on.

I appreciate the fact that the LORDS community exists. I have grown up living and working in Lutheran Schools. Our schools are places of community, care, learning, service, and faith. I appreciate the staff I work with and the families and students that walk through our doors every day. God has blessed me in so many ways through my association with Lutheran Schools.

Think about it: What do you appreciate about your life, your family, and the world? Take time out of your busy life and consider the question. It may make all the difference to your day.

Community Engagement

There are several opportunities for the LORDS Community to celebrate and connect with one another. Remember, our theme for this year is ‘Connect and Flourish’. It was great to see families from our Year 6 classes attend our transition into Year 7 evening held this week. It was wonderful to hear about so many of our families coming together across the Gold Coast and Brisbane to commemorate ANZAC Day. There are some upcoming events that are significant and terrific opportunities to connect and celebrate with community:

• Mother’s Day Open Classroom and Morning Tea on 12th May
• Festival of Fun on 20th May (10am - 2 pm)
• Junior School Musical on 24th-25th May

Our community responded to the call from Rosies - Friends On The Street for milk and soup for our friends experiencing homelessness. A very big thank you for your kindness and generosity. On Thursday morning we welcomed the lovely Teresa Bettles, Branch Coordinator of Rosie's, Southport-Nerang. It was wonderful to hear Teresa's reaction: "Your community’s response has blown me away. This is enough to keep us going for 4 months! Thank you LORDS Community." 

This is about community engagement beyond the gates of LORDS. Our connections and partnerships with organisations in the community have always been a special part of who we are. Thank you for your support and for making a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you to those members of the LORDS Community who represented us so well at the Cabbage Tree Point and Pimpama ANZAC Day Services (sorry if we missed anybody). A day to reflect and give thanks for sacrifice and service. Lest we forget.

And also thanks to our students and staff across the school, Cadet Luca Papworth, and our special guest Lieutenant Colonel Retired, Douglas Oliver for leading us in our LORDS ANZAC Service on Wednesday morning.

Our Year 12 Hospitality students were hard at work preparing for their food stalls at lunchtime on Wednesday. It looked delicious! 

Ms Hoff loved her lunch from the Year 12 Hospitality stall. The weather didn’t stop the lines with students and staff enjoying the delicious food prepared by our students. Congratulations to the students and staff on a terrific achievement.

Brainstorm Productions visited our Year 7 & 8 students this week and presented their student well-being performance ‘Sticks & Stones'. This is a live theatre experience that explores different forms of bullying and aggression, and encourages respect, assertiveness, and conflict resolution at school, at home, and online. Our students were challenged to consider the impact of their behaviour and develop strategies for managing emotions, seeking help, and building respectful relationships.

The Brainstorm Productions experience is part of our student well-being curriculum and has been developed by education and mental health professionals. This engaging theatrical experience uses humour, soundscapes, and physical theatre to capture students' attention and inspire them to make positive changes. Key themes from the show were discussed in a post-show forum and will be explored further during Pastoral Care, to keep the important conversations going.

Last week students from the Pathways subject 'Fashion for Change' went on an excursion to The Sewing Lair . They heard from Cass who shared her own story of hardship, and how she has used her experiences as inspiration to make social change through the use of textiles. She shared a number of projects that they are currently working on to reduce textile wastage and give back to the community. Some of these projects include upcycling old uniforms to make clothes for children in foster care, creating library bags so that children living in hardship can borrow books from their school library, and creating and making fidget blankets for patients with Dementia.

It was fascinating to see how a bit of creativity and thinking outside the box can help reduce wastage, while also having a positive difference in the lives of others.
Over the term, these students will be challenged to use upcycle materials to design and make something that should have a positive impact on the lives of others. We can't wait to see what they come up with!

LORDS has been in partnership with Rosies - Friends On The Street for over nine years. Last week was the first time this year that Ms Hoff, Mr Engelbrecht, Jayda, Charlotte, and Bella (from Year 11) volunteered and connected with those people experiencing homelessness in our local community. We give thanks for organisations such as Rosie’s for supporting people in need on the Gold Coast.

Last week a group of Year 10 students ventured out to attend an industry tour, hosted by Gold Coast Manufacturing Hub. Students participated in a tour of Major Training's facility, learning about licenses and qualifications on offer. Students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from various local businesses currently looking for school-based trainees and apprentices.

Students are encouraged to keep their eye out for more opportunities to attend similar career immersion days and industry tours as part of LORDS 'Pathways Discovery Program'.

Our Year 6 students were all smiles when school returned for Term 2 as they wore their new Year 6 2023 shirts for the first time. They look amazing! Thanks to Mrs Hogbin and Mr Steinhardt for making this possible and working so hard to get it all organised.

Last Friday, our Year 1 cohort was honoured to welcome Kathy Friebel from Lutheran Services to our classroom to give a talk about aged care, which is a part of our Project Based Learning theme of ‘Say Goodbye To Home’. It was such a great experience for the students and we’re very thankful to Kathy for giving up her time to present and answer a range of questions from the students. It was a fantastic session.

Year 3 had a visit from Kevin and Gary, volunteers at Orange Sky Australia They learned about the work that Orange Sky does for those who are experiencing homelessness. Today’s important message was: “Do not judge” and “Spend time listening”. They shared how much volunteering adds value to their lives and when they think they are having a bad day, that they just remember their friends they meet on the street.

Buddy time! The blessing of being part of a K-12 school community. It was great to see our Year 12 students connecting with our Year 1 students for some fun and learning last week.

On Wednesday last week, Year 5 students travelled back in time to experience life on the gold fields. The students enjoyed activities such as tent-making, panning for gold, haggling at an old general store, and looking for gold. We even got to make and enjoy some delicious damper that was baked on an open fire. Such a fun and educational day!

Check out these amazing artworks created by Olivia-Rose S (Year 3) and Bella-Mae S (Year 1) that are being posted off to take part in the 2023 Lutheran Synod Art Competition. The competition required artists to respond to the theme of “Called according to God’s purpose”. Well done girls. We wish you all the best in the competition.

On Thursday this week,  our Year 1 students visited Pimpama Tricare Aged Care facility as part of their Project Based Learning Unit. The students were able to take a look at the space to see what it looks like and feels like when our elderly friends might have to move in. They will now explore how they might make the space feel more comfortable and familiar.

Our Indigenous Garden has a new element added by our 4A teacher, Paula Ward. Below Paula tells us about this new addition:

"I am super excited to share with you our freshly produced Yarning Circle box (wonderfully handmade by Mr Stephen Blair in Design Technology!) which contains our yarning cards and talking stick that will be housed in our Indigenous Garden (beside H block). These yarning cards are a really valuable way to connect and build relationships with our students, while also monitoring their well-being. There are 30 yarning cards in total and I will rotate a number of them termly."

On 19th April, our LORDS students represented our school at the Beenleigh Zone Cross Country event. Everyone who competed gave their best and represented our school with pride and respect. Congratulations to Athena W and Indie C who placed 12th and qualified for the upcoming Pacific District Cross Country event. Also, well done to Hannah E and Mia C who placed within the top 20 and are reserves for the Pacific District event. It is a massive achievement considering there are upwards of 130 students in each race. Also congratulations to our 10-year-old boy relay team who finished 4th out of 30 schools. Well done to all.

We had some very keen athletes who competed in the Northern Regional Futsal Titles over the Easter weekend. A massive congratulations to Jesse P who played with the Under 9 West Moreton side. They went undefeated all tournament taking out a grand final win as well. Dawson S, Eli N, and Daly K who played with the Gold Coast Under 10s also went undefeated in the tournament also bagging themselves a grand final win. Tannim K and Frank O also played extremely well making it to the Semi-finals. Well done representing your respective regions boys.

Last Sunday several LORDS students and staff represented our school at the Gold Coast Running Festival Altogether, we had 11 athletes complete 57km - the 2nd highest school total on the Gold Coast. Well done to all those involved.

A big shout out to Eli M in Year 6 for his amazing effort in cleaning cars over the weekend to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. Thanks to everyone who came along. Eli raised $106. Well done Eli. We are proud of the way you served your community and raised money for a great cause.
