The Psalms often reflect the greatness and beauty of God and creation. Psalm 148 is a Psalm of praise. Over the coming weeks at LORDS we continue to explore what it means to be a social and environmental learner as we praise and acknowledge the creator of our world.

Psalm 148

1 Praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD from the heavens;

    praise him in the heights above.

2 Praise him, all his angels;

    praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

3 Praise him, sun and moon;

    praise him, all you shining stars.

4 Praise him, you highest heavens

    and you waters above the skies.

5 Let them praise the name of the LORD,

    for at his command they were created,

A reminder to all families that Friday 2nd  September is a student-free day across the state for ATAR confirmation. Staff will be working at school. The office will be open as normal from 8.00am -4.00pm.

The Senior Art Elective Evening held last week was a great success after its 2 year COVID hiatus. Parents and students attending the evening saw performances from Year 11 and 12 Music and Drama students, in addition to Senior Visual Art displays including many interactive works. 

Destination Moon!  As part of Science Week, Year 7 participated in an ‘Escape the Room’ challenge requiring them to solve 10 scientific challenges to unlock the codes and restore power to the spaceship controls! Students really enjoyed tackling the hands-on problems together and racing the clock to solve the challenges and win a prize!

Year 8 celebrated Science Week by going to the beach! Together with a geologist, they investigated land formations along the coast to learn more about the rock cycle. What a beautiful day for an educational beach visit.

Last week our Year 11 Science Ambassadors Kiara, Holly, Jasmin, and Dakota performed a range of Science experiments for some excited students, including Elephant Toothpaste, Mentos in Coke, and a Fire tornado!

Year 11 Psychology students visited the Junior School during Science Week to show off their Big Brain skills. Our Junior students love seeing the "big kids" and interacting with them in activities like this one.

Our Secondary students did very well at the Japanese speaking contest held at Griffith University over the weekend.

Well done Japanese students!

It was lovely to hear ‘Konnichiwa’ from excited students today as we welcomed visiting Japanese students to LORDS. 

The Nagoya University students are completing a course of English study at Griffith University and spent the day at LORDS as part of testing out their English skills. The students joined Japanese classes, presenting information about school life in Japan, popular tourist spots in Japan, and special school events. They joined in Japanese language games and mintie challenges, and took part in ‘Australia vs Japan’ while playing handball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball at lunchtime. The LORDS students used Japanese and English with their new friends and can’t wait to put their communication skills to the test in Japan in the future!

The kitchen has been a busy place this week, as Year 10A Hospitality planned and prepared for our food truck event!  Menu options included loaded potatoes (both meat and vegetarian options), bibimbap (Korean rice bowls), and beef burritos, along with traditional lemonade, peach iced tea, and fruit juice punch.  Students worked extremely hard, preparing 140 portions for our senior students. Their work ethic, quality of food produced, and teamwork in the kitchen was incredible.  We are excited to watch their skills develop over the senior years and cannot wait to see what they can produce in year 12!  Well done 10A Hospitality!

What a wonderful day to be out in the gardens. Our lunchtime Gardening Club is doing a fantastic job at caring for and growing a great range of produce in our school garden beds. Ms Allan and her team of helpers have planted mini tomatoes, herbs, squash, beans, and lots more! Today they were feeding the plants with worm tea from our very own worm farms. It's great to see all the native bees buzzing around the gardens and our kids enjoying and learning about nature. Watch this space to see how we can use this produce to engage our kids in more meaningful learning opportunities.

A HUGE congratulations to our AMAZING Wakakirri team for 2022!

You were all fantastic and amazing on stage! For such a large cast, we managed ourselves really well.  The adjudicators LOVED our story, and said it was from our student’s hearts – which is what Wakakirri is really about.

LORDS Production – ‘Free to be Me’ – won four awards on the night:

• Most Creative use of the theme (RISE)
• Most creative re-use of materials for sets and props
• Most creative reuse of materials for costumes
• Best public speaking award

WELL DONE TEAM LORDS!  (Wakakirri is not a competition – it is a celebration of Performing Arts). 

Needless to say, there are no longer after-school rehearsals for Wakakirri – but stay tuned for further opportunities in LORDS Junior School Performing Arts.

Some very exciting news! Last weekend Year 6 student Patrick B won the Australian Kart Championship. Patrick's sister, Alice (Year 9) has been selected as a finalist in the FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars program in France on Sunday. While Alice was attending the FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars program in France, her younger brother Patrick was making waves on the racing circuit winning the KA4 Junior title at the final round of the Australian Kart Championship in Newcastle on Sunday!

Congratulations to both students and we wish you every success with your sport.

Students from Prep to Year 2 came from all around the world, representing different countries in our Mini-Olympics.  We had Japan, Canada, U.S.A., Scotland, Vanuatu, and South Africa.  This Mini-Olympics was a fun afternoon as our Year 11/12 Sport and Rec students helped organise different activities and make sure every student left with a smile on their face.  Great work to all our mini athletes!

34 students from Years 3 – 6 participated in the Lutheran Athletics Carnival at QSAC this week. Students participated against other Lutheran schools and we had some fantastic results.

Healing is holistic.  One has to be impressed with the way Olivia Newton-John set up a cancer clinic in Melbourne but was careful to include Wellness in the services offered. Nursing itself arose from the need for extra care for patients to aid their recovery.

Daniel Browning is such a good interviewer and Kelly and I were ‘glued to the radio’ as we listened to an interview with the late Archie Roach.  In his memoirs, he tells the story of how he came to learn that his true name was Archie Roach, not Archie Cox.  Sadly, his mother and father had already passed by the time he made this discovery.  His whole life, one of ups and downs, was a journey of finding himself and his place in the world.  Interestingly, in the interview, he said he decided to forgive, for his own sake and wellbeing.  Maybe there is a profound truth there.  When we forgive, we are kind to ourselves.

Jesus was the great healer.  He healed physically but his aims were holistic.  Those healed by Jesus were made whole, spirit, mind, and body.

 ‘Then he put his hands on her and immediately she straightened up and praised God.’  Luke 13:13

‘Straightening up’ is as much about having the wherewithal to face a new day – a kinder day.
