One of the Ways of Learning at LORDS is that of being a collaborative learner. While on earth, Jesus didn’t just fly solo when it came to his ministry, he had a group of people called his disciples who he worked with in collaboration throughout his time on earth. Together they used their gifts and talents to serve the people in their community. We are reminded in 1 Peter 4:10 about this very thing. It is an encouragement for us all.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

In today's rapidly changing world, the ability to collaborate effectively has become a crucial skill for success. Being a collaborative learner not only enhances our understanding of various subjects but also fosters creativity, critical thinking, and empathy.

Building a Supportive Learning Community:
Collaborative learning creates a supportive environment where individuals can share their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. By engaging in group discussions, brainstorming sessions, and team projects, learners can tap into a diverse range of ideas and insights. Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills:
When we collaborate with others, we are exposed to different viewpoints and thought processes. This challenges our own thinking, that can enhance critical thinking skills. Collaborative learners learn to analyse information from multiple angles, evaluate evidence, and make informed decisions. By engaging in debates and discussions, learners develop the ability to think critically and consider alternative perspectives.

Fostering Creativity and Innovation:
Collaboration sparks creativity by encouraging individuals to think outside the box and explore new ideas. When learners collaborate, they can combine their unique strengths and skills to solve complex problems and innovative solutions.

Cultivating Empathy and Cultural Awareness:
Collaborative learning promotes empathy and cultural awareness by exposing learners to different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By working with diverse groups, learners develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for different cultures, beliefs, and values. This fosters empathy, tolerance, and respect, creating a more inclusive and harmonious learning environment.

Leave Requests

Families are reminded that requests for leave need to be in writing to both your class teacher and Mrs Hardke (P-6) and Mrs Kinne (Year 7-12). We strongly encourage you to talk through your request for leave with the school before you go ahead and book or plan any activities.

There are certain times of the term that are not ideal for leave in regard to the learning and teaching process. We understand that certain family circumstances may require leave (eg compassionate leave) and we are understanding of these requests and will support families in these situations.

Our Year 7 Japanese students experienced the calm and peacefulness of a Japanese Garden 🌿 last week when they visited the Japanese Garden at Mt Coot-tha. They reflected on the unique elements of a Japanese garden and participated in ink-painting and haiku poetry workshops, designed to further enhance their appreciation of the beauty of the garden. They were very lucky as the cherry blossom was in full bloom and many of their haiku poems captured the beauty of the flowers – tough to do in the 5-7-5 syllable format! 

After working so hard, they quickly devoured their Japanese bento lunch 🍱 enjoying karaage chicken, Japanese BBQ beef, pork ginger, or tofu – so delicious! We finished our day with a quick stop by the newly renovated Bonsai House before heading home. A great day of LORDS Ways – Curious, Collaborative, and Creative!

It's time to start getting ready for our Year 12 Formal and Valedictory! 

We are now collecting RSVPs, dietary requirements, and payments. An email was sent to Year 12 students and parents yesterday (Thursday 3rd August) with these details and a link to the form to respond.

We will be in contact with further information closer to the date.

We are very excited to share that over the past few weeks, we have begun to launch the new LORDS Ways with our students. The LORDS Ways are the skills, attributes, and mindsets we believe are important to develop in our young people, to ensure they are prepared to enter and contribute to a rapidly changing world. This work has been based on current research surrounding the future of work, aligned with the General Capabilities from the Australian Curriculum, and has included input from staff, students, and parents to ensure it is meeting the needs of our learning community.

Below is the graphical representation of the new LORDS ways. This visual will be displayed in every classroom across the school and will become a familiar reference point for staff and students.

What are the LORDS ways?

The LORDS ways are separated into three distinct categories. Ways of Thinking, Learning, and Being and align with our school vision of educating the heart, mind, and hands, so that our learners feel equipped to make a positive difference in the world.

As a school community, we are beginning to explicitly teach and engage with the LORDS Ways so that our learners gain a deeper understanding of what these skills, mindsets, and attributes look like in action. We have introduced stickers (Junior School) and commendations (Secondary School) to instantly recognise and encourage students who are demonstrating and developing these ‘Ways’.

So, if your child comes home with a LORDS Way sticker or a prize from their Year Level meeting, please have a chat with them to find out why they received this and encourage them to continue to grow the LORDS Way. As we gradually roll out this exciting initiative we will continue to regularly update and share important information with you so watch this space!

On 26th July we welcomed 18 students and 2 teachers from Kokushikan High School in Tokyo back to LORDS! The Japanese students were met with friendly waves and choruses of ‘konnichiwa-s’ wherever they went, as the LORDS students were eager to include them in their classes and break time activities. Year 5 students are learning about the famous spot artwork created by Yayoi Kusama, so it was a perfect opportunity to draw some dots with our Japanese visitors. The students then put the language skills of the Year 11/12 Japanese class to the test, chatting about topics as varied as pets to mobile phone use to part-time jobs, before learning how to play ‘Silent Ball.’ 

A huge thank you to our wonderful LORDS Host Families for opening their homes and hearts to these students and making this opportunity possible! 

Our visiting Japanese students are keeping busy at LORDS, making new friends, and growing in confidence every day! They have played games that involve hats, toys, dangerous animals, Minties, and lots of fun – all while improving their English and giving the LORDS Elective Japanese students the chance to practice their Japanese speaking skills. With only a few days left of their homestay, the Japanese students have enjoyed wonderful experiences with their host families too – trips to the beach, patting alpacas, sunset bike rides, theme park visits, bbqs, bush walks, and board games, just to name a few! Thank you to the LORDS Host families for making this experience unforgettable for the Kokushikan High School students!

TODAY'S UPDATE:

What a fun week the LORDS students have had, spending time with our new Japanese friends! In the last few days, the Japanese students have assisted the Year 8/9 Elective Japanese class with their calligraphy skills and enjoyed Aussie snacks, including individual pavlovas made by the very generous Mrs Sadler. They’ve gotten to know the Year 5s over a board game and crazy hiragana songs, showed Year 3 students how to write their name in Japanese, made origami with Year 4/5, (including a crocodile and penguin!), and taught the Prep classes animal noises in Japanese! The Preps were amazed to hear that an elephant says ‘paoon’ in Japanese! They also managed to squeeze in some active games involving bean bags and ‘scissors paper rock’, and some Pokemon colouring in!

Our Japanese friends leave us on Sunday and we wish them a safe and blessed trip back to Japan. We've loved every minute of hosting them at LORDS.

LORDS students studying toward their Certificate II Health support services test out a few of our support health devices. Vocational education gives students the necessary skills to work in industry and a Certificate qualification to frame!

Students who study VET can use their qualifications to gain employment or progress to higher level qualifications like a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree.

The Year 7 students who don't study Japanese had the opportunity to connect with the environment at Mt Cootha and gain an insight into the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' way of life. They explored the concept that their way of life was uniquely expressed through ways of being, knowing, thinking, and doing.

The session included active Indigenous games such as Goodi which was used to develop target accuracy for hunting, string making with plant fibre from palm leaves, tasting of bush foods including Finger Limes, Lilly Pilly Jam, Honey from wild native bees, and Salt Bush. Students were also given time to slow their minds and body, tuning into nature by observing the sounds and movements around them and connecting with country the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people did.

Recently, our Year 4 students went on camp to Tyalgum Ridge Retreat. They enjoyed a variety of activities which included high and low ropes, flying fox, archery, team-building games, and camp skills. Students had the opportunity to interact and feed farm animals and they thoroughly enjoyed the nighttime spotlight treasure hunt activity. It was such a joy to see students developing new skills and taking risks by being brave and courageous.

Our Year 2 students are exploring story as part of their English and Drama unit this term. It was exciting times for them this morning as they had staff perform a version of The Three Little Pigs 🐷🐷🐷 It got a little bit crazy at some points, but a lot of fun was had by all!

Recently our Year 5 students completed an empathy dive as part of this semester's Project Based Learning unit. The students are learning about just how lucky they are for a number of different reasons, including their wealth, where they live, and access to clean food and water. Did you know that children as young as 5 years old walk up to 6 hours a day to collect water for their families? They do this instead of going to school. Year 5 experience what it might be like to walk for their water instead of having it freely accessed from a tap.

Four of our Junior School students participated in the Interschool Spelling Bee hosted by St Stephen's this week and what an achievement it was. Some very challenging words left the audience in awe at the talent amongst these young people.

🎓👒🧢🎩👑Hats off to Reading! 📚📖📚 Lots of action in the library at lunchtime this week as we celebrated our love for reading at LORDS!

On Wednesday this week we welcomed author and illustrator combo Dannika Patterson (Author) and Megan Forward (Illustrator) to help celebrate Book Week.  They shared their journey and skills with the students about the process of creating a book. Did you know that Dannika wrote and re-wrote her book Jacaranda Magic 27 times? Megan also makes many mistakes when creating her artwork. She believes that her mistakes often lead to a better or more interesting picture. Instead of getting angry and throwing her work in the bin she solves problems and tries to figure out a way to include her mistake in artworks. If you are lucky enough to read 'Scribbly Gum', one of Dannika and Megan's books, look out for the secret message written in the scribbly gum writing. Thanks for visiting Dannika and Megan!

Ms Hoff loved having some Year 2 students come and visit her last week to show her how much their writing has improved this year. They were writing about what they would do if they were the principal of the school. Ideas included wearing crazy socks 🧦and pants every day, everyone has to do 100 cartwheels a day 🤸 and a magic show 🎩🐰 to finish off the school day. Some food for thought for Ms Hoff! 

It's gone so fast....Prep has reached their 100 days of education at LORDS! The students have been creating artwork to mark their 100 day milestone. Congratulations Prep students!

We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our talented students who represented LORDS School at the Pacific District Athletics Carnival in Brisbane. It was a day filled with determination, camaraderie, and impressive performances. We couldn't be prouder of our students and their exceptional sportsmanship.

1. Early Start and Endurance:

The day began bright and early at 6 am as our athletes eagerly prepared to showcase their skills in various events. Throughout the day, our dedicated students competed with unwavering enthusiasm, some participating in events until 5 pm! Their commitment and dedication were truly commendable.

2. Strong Participation:

With great pride, we witnessed over 45 of our students participating in numerous events, representing LORDS School in their respective categories. Their hard work and dedication in training leading up to the carnival certainly paid off as they gave their all on the field.

3. Spirit of Community:

Our students exemplified the true spirit of community and sportsmanship, supporting each other wholeheartedly. Their encouragement and cheers echoed throughout the venue, earning them admiration and praise from other schools and spectators alike.

4. Qualification for South Coast Athletics Team:

We are thrilled to announce that several of our outstanding students have earned their well-deserved spots in the prestigious South Coast Athletics Team. This achievement reflects their exceptional talent and dedication to their respective disciplines. Students' names will be released and communicated once received. 

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents and staff who played an integral role in supporting and encouraging our students throughout this exhilarating journey. Your unwavering support and enthusiasm are invaluable in nurturing our students' passion for sports and personal growth.

Overall, it was a truly memorable and successful day for LORDS School at the Pacific District Athletics Carnival. Our students have made us proud, not only with their achievements but also with their exemplary sportsmanship. Congratulations to each participant for their hard work and achievements!

International champions! A massive congratulations to Dawson S and Daly K for their efforts throughout their recent International futsal tour to Fiji. The boys were part of the championship-winning squad claiming victory with a 3-0 win in the grand final. Congratulations boys. We are so proud of you!

Our Year 11 student, Jack M graded to Black belt in Zen Do Kai recently. The grading went for just over 1.5hrs and he had to complete a variety of tasks, including 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, 100 star jumps, black belt carta, punch routines, kick routines, as well as 20 rounds of sparring. Jack trains at the Pimpama Sanchin Dojo on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Kaidance and Katelyn went to Port Macquarie last weekend to compete in a Physie Dance Competition.
Both Kaidance and Katelyn placed first in the 9 year old heats.

It was a tremendous day and the girls both showed true team spirit, cheering on their fellow 9 year old teammates and watching the other competing ages groups cheering extra loud when GC Physie (their club) placed.

Congratulations to Kaidance and Katelyn! Well done! We're proud of you both.

Australian Sports Camps is back running 3-day school sports camps for primary-aged children in the school holidays. 

It is a great opportunity for children to improve their skills or learn a new sport with friends.

Scholarships

Owing to the Gold Coast Show long weekend, the date for the next round of scholarship testing has been amended to Saturday 26th August.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18th August.

Academic scholarships reward high-level academic achievers going into Years 7 to 12 in 2024. Those seeking an academic scholarship must sit the scholarship testing on Saturday 26th August. The testing is open to both current and future students of LORDS. To apply, please click on this link:

Should you or anyone you know be interested in a LORDS education, please ensure an application is received by our Registrar as soon as possible.
