Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent and has become a special way of beginning the forty day journey (not counting Sundays) to Good Friday and Easter. Jesus comes alongside us, looks at the things which destroy life and says to us…..COME WITH ME. We follow Christ, as He makes his way toward the Cross, which destroyed His life.

Wearing ashes, we follow Jesus, we discover that He actually comes with us into all those situations, which threaten to rob our life of its value. As we follow Him, we discover how He intends to deal with everything that destroys life. Things like selfishness and hate. Even death itself. Wearing ashes, we believe that there is life beyond death. That is why people come and receive the sign of the cross marked with ashes. The mark of the cross reminds us that we our loved by a God who loved us so much, he gave us his only son.

Our Opening Worships on 2nd February were a great celebration of the LORDS Community as we installed student leaders from across the school, installed new staff, acknowledged the achievements of our Seniors 2023, and welcomed our Seniors 2024. Our Secondary School also heard from inspirational speaker Dr Dinesh Palipana. He encouraged us to seize the day and find passions that mean something to us and bring purpose to our lives.

We are so excited to announce our 2024 Secondary School Musical, "Alice in Wonderland".

Tickets will go on sale in March.

GET YOUR WHITE CARD!

A White Card is a license required to enter and work on construction sites in Australia. The White Card is also known as general construction induction card. It is an essential license for anyone looking to work in the construction industry. Those seeking roles such as WHS managers, electricians, painters, plasters, architects, design engineers, and more- all require a White card to present on site!
While each state and territory in Australia issues its own White Card, they are nationally recognised and can be used anywhere in Australia, regardless of the state or territory in which you completed the construction induction training. Students wishing to conduct work experience on any building site will require a White Card prior.
On Monday 22nd April, Year 10 - 12 students are invited to participate in a full day of training here at LORDS to obtain their White Card. The cost of this valuable licence is $90 payable over the phone or in person at the front office by the last day of Term 1.

Surviving the Adult Jungle is all about learning real life skills for life after school. On Tuesday this week during our Fire Safety lesson (and under the supervision of a trained professional), we were taught how to effectively use an extinguisher to put out a real fire. We also learned the difference between Dry Chemical Powder and Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers and when they need to be used. We learned the acronym PASS and RACE to help us in emergency situations and we got outside and had fun with our peers!

This week the LORDS Senior String Ensemble made its 3rd annual visit to the Aspley Special School. The students of Aspley were thrilled to see us again and were treated to some live music and given opportunities to play and dance along with the ensemble. This is always a wonderful experience for both the performers and the audience.

Last week our Year 8/9 Active Warriors had the privilege of hosting a special visit from Councillor Mark Hammel our local councillor. He passionately underscored the pivotal role our local area plays in promoting physical activity, stressing the importance of maintaining parks, playgrounds, and facilities for community well-being. CR Hammel’s inspiring words resonated deeply with us, highlighting the invaluable role that outdoor spaces serve in encouraging exercise and fostering social connections. This interaction was especially significant for our young future leaders, empowering them to voice their concerns and contribute to shaping our community's trajectory toward inclusion. Additionally, through engaging with the LORDS Ways of Thinking and Being, students not only honed their critical thinking skills but also cultivated deep empathy.

ICAS is an academic competition that challenges students and recognises their achievements in core subjects such as English, Maths and Science. The competition was started over 40 years ago and has since become an internationally-recognised annual event completed across 41 countries. The questions are engaging, fun, and written in a way that is entirely different from regular school assessments, aiming to test students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities.

ICAS Benefits

For students, the competition challenges them in ways unlike their regular school assessments, encouraging them to perform at their highest possible standard and rewarding them for their achievements. This can be extremely satisfying and help to build their confidence and boost their motivation. 

For parents, ICAS can give them insight into how their children compare against their classmates, their cohort, and the rest of the country. When combined with feedback elsewhere in their schooling, they have a better understanding of how their child is progressing.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023. Despite the many challenges you have faced throughout your secondary schooling, your resilience and commitment have shone through and resulted in pleasing results. You are free to chase your dreams as you step forward into a new chapter. You serve as an example to the younger students of how to be good students. You are reminded of the College bible verse: ‘We are the Lords’ as you navigate life after school. God’s richest blessings.

Our academic scholarship program rewards students who are high-level academic achievers and will be entering Years 7 to 12 the following calendar year.

Criteria: LORDS awards academic scholarships based on the results of our scholarship examinations which are held twice a year in March and again in September. Students only need to sit one exam per year. Exam results, in consultation with a Principal’s interview, previous school reports, and NAPLAN results, may result in a scholarship being offered for the following academic year.

This week at STEM club students began to brainstorm ideas and made initial plans to reinvigorate our school fishpond that unfortunately was impacted by inclement weather over the school holidays. In groups, they discussed how to establish an ecosystem pond, considering factors such as drainage, maintenance, types of fish, etc. that would be viable. This valuable information will be used by our Maintenance Team to restore the pond to its former glory.

Ms Hoff loved visiting our Prep classes last week to share her favourite story book ‘The Book with No Pictures’ with everyone. We all agreed on what our favourite page was (it made Ms Hoff say some ridiculous things). As you can see from the photos, this book is clearly hilarious and fun!

Our Little Wonders have shared such joy being the “site managers” of the Playground build.
We are excited to see it taking shape.

Along with our builders, we welcome back all our Educators: Mrs Mason, Miss Jo, Miss Danielle, and Miss Dakoda back for an exciting 2024 along with our new Early Childhood Teacher, Miss Jen.
Miss Jen has brought with her passion for learning together, taking care of one another & most of all, having fun while playing.

Here at LORDS Little Wonders Kindergarten, we believe children should feel a strong sense of belonging to their world & see themselves as capable people.
We are excited to see what 2024 blesses us with.

Wheelchair Experience/Wheelchair Basketball
As part of the Year 5 Project Based Learning Unit – Uniquely Able, students had the chance to feel what it would be like to be in a wheelchair. After some basic chair orientation, students participated in games and activities from their wheelchairs. Students were then given the opportunity to take part in a game of basketball - very similar to the able-bodied version but showcasing the wheelchair as a piece of sporting equipment! Students then had an opportunity to ask the hosts, who were in wheelchairs themselves, questions and more about their story. While much fun was had students began to understand what it must be like to live with a disability that confines you to a wheelchair.

ALWS Workshop
As part of the Year 5 Project Based Learning Unit, students took part in a workshop hosted by a guest speaker from ALWS. During the workshop, students learned about how people in different countries manage and cope with disabilities. Being Uniquely Able looks different for everyone. Students gained an understanding of some of the challenges and struggles people with disabilities experience.

On the 31st January, 1st February, and 5th February, the Year 11 and 12 composite Physical Education class attended the Carrara Indoor Sports Centre to participate in three badminton training sessions. During this time students were able to refine their badminton skills using tactical awareness and record their progress via video footage and game performance analysis sheets. This was an invaluable exercise for students to gain primary data that they will now be able to use in their first internal assessment.

Rivers Gala Days:
Pacific District School Sport provides several opportunities for students to be involved in a number of sports across the term to showcase their talents against other schools in the district. This term LORDS has already entered teams into the Boys Touch Football and Basketball Gala Days. Students who have been invited to attend from their interest have permission and information awaiting on the parent portal.

Unfortunately, there was not enough interest from senior school girls to also nominate teams in Touch Football and Basketball. However, over the coming weeks, interest will be called for Gala Day participation in Boys and Girls Futsal and Girls Volleyball. Look out for daily notices to find out when.

What a day by the pool at the Beenleigh Zone Swimming Carnival!

Our students raced incredibly well against some tough competition and held their own in the water. We are very proud of the way they conducted themselves with not only their swimming efforts but also their respect and sportsmanship throughout the day. Congratulations to LORDS AFL superstars in the making Max C and Aiden J. They have both been selected as part of the Gold Coast Suns Academy in 2024 to help progress their skills and talents on the field. We wish these boys all the best for the year!

Queensland Indoor Cricket
Recently, Tyler W was selected as part of the Queensland Indoor Cricket team. As a school community, we would like to congratulate Tyler for this incredible achievement and wish him all the best for the upcoming representative tournament.
