One of our LORDS Ways is ‘I can be Brave’ (Ways of Learning). In the Bible, there is the story of David and Goliath, where David overcomes his fear and wins victory over the giant, Goliath. We could look at Goliath as representing the giant fears that we might have in our own lives eg anxiety, a difficult conversation, public speaking, or a health challenge. God gives us the strength to face these fears with bravery, to give light to darkness. The courage to ‘show up’ when life is difficult can make a braver with each step we take. 

So be encouraged by the words of Deuteronomy 31:6 “ Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid, for the Lord your God, he is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Connect With Us

Throughout this term there a many opportunities for families to engage and connect with the LORDS Community. Thanks to those parents/caregivers who were able to attend parent/teacher interviews in the past few weeks. Please make contact with your child’s class teacher or subject teacher if you were unable to come to these sessions to make an alternative time to meet.

Our ACHIEVE evening being held on Wednesday 26th August (4:00-6:00pm) is a wonderful opportunity for families across the school (especially Years 5-11) to explore the subject offering and pathways that we offer at LORDS in the Secondary School. You can ask questions of our staff. Explore vocational pathways. Look at flexible ways subjects can be offered to meet student needs. Make the most of this opportunity to engage with the school by attending this event.

Congratulations to our Year 11 debating team who won their debate against A. B. Paterson on Wednesday night. This means they will be in the semi-finals in a few week's time!

The topic was "Providing military support to other nations is in our nation's best interest". A tricky topic for our students who had to argue the negative side, but they stepped up and presented some strong speeches.

We are so proud of the progress these students have made over the course of the competition and their dedication and efforts.

Our Years 7 to 12 staff and students will be showcasing the subjects we offer in an engaging presentation set across our bushland-setting campus. Students in Year 6 will also find this a tremendous opportunity to find out about high school and what subjects they could study in Year 7. Congratulations to Sienna S for completing two Griffith University Guest units in Psychology and Biology. She is now eligible for direct entry to a relevant degree at Griffith. LORDS partnership with Griffith University means that students can study university-level subjects while still at school. The LORDS Pathways Program allows students to follow their interests and passions while still at school and well into their future (ATAR or vocational).

Congratulations to our Year 10 Drama students (with some support from a few Year 11/12 students) for their participation in the Queensland Theatre Company’s ‘The Scene Project.’ Students were given a script and then created a scene that was performed in a professional theatre with actors and directors through Queensland Theatre. Our students represented themselves and our school so well. We received excellent feedback about our performance including the tight focus of the chorus/ensemble, the terrific physicality of the performers, and the audience laughed in all the right places! Thanks to Mrs Sullivan for her wonderful support of our young people throughout this process. Go Team LORDS !

Hello from everyone at Little Wonders Kindy.

We have been on many adventures over the past few weeks.

As you may be aware, we don’t close anymore over the school holidays, we continue the learning journey in getting ready for the next stage of learning.
Our many adventures over this time have included, NAIDOC learning and celebrations, show and share with the letter of the week (parents are being very creative with this K = Kaleidoscopes, L = Lollypops, Lemon, Lego, Lassoes)
We also have a lot of Sensory and messy play, a police visit and now we are including Bush Kindy once a week, along with a whole lot more!
As you can see from the pictures our Little Wonders and showing such joy daily with their peers.

We love to see what activities our students participate in over the school holidays. Quinn C in Year 5 competed in his first Rubik’s Cube Competition at the Queensland Open titles in Brisbane over the last weekend of the holidays. He competed in a few events - 3x3, 2x2 & megaminx. 

For Quinn’s favourite and most popular cube, the 3x3, here are his amazing results ---->>>

🟨 First round on Saturday 8th July - Quinn placed 183rd place out of 285 competitors. The event format is 5 solves, of which the fastest & slowest solves are eliminated.  The average of the 3 other solves becomes the recorded average score. 

🟦 Quinn scored an average of 35.32 seconds, and a Pb of 31.54 seconds.  Some of these competitors are world champions ( the world record for a 3x3 solve is 3.1 seconds!!)

🟥 Second round, on Sunday 9th July. Top 200 qualified. Quinn managed a new PB of 26.85 seconds with an average of 32.7 seconds. A huge improvement on his first-round results!!

🟨 Quinn finished 160th out of the top 200 competitors. 

The next competition is in September 2023 for the National Titles. 

Such an amazing achievement, with mental focus and determination. Congratulations Quinn!

 

What wonderful days last term celebrating our Junior School Showcase of Learning. If you were able to attend, I am sure that you would agree with just how much learning our students have done over the course of the semester. It was fantastic to see our young people talk so confidently about their learning. Thanks so much to our staff for their guidance and preparation for the event. A great way to end the semester.

If you missed our Facebook post last term, here's a recap of our wonderful Grandparents and Special Friends Day held on Friday 16th June. It was such a wonderful morning for LORDS Grandparents and Special Friends Day. Thanks to our Junior Strings and Choir for entertaining our visitors. Everyone enjoyed visits to the classrooms and joining in on some intergenerational activities. We give thanks for the gift of family and special people in our lives.

Year 3 would like to say a big thank you to everyone at LORDS for donating hygiene items for our St Vinnie’s Winter Appeal. We had lots of fun putting the items into hygiene packs.

Did you know that Refugee Week took place from the 18th-24th June? The week aims to raise awareness of issues affecting refugees and promotes harmony and togetherness. On Thursday in the last week of term 2, Multicultural Families Organisation Inc. came to LORDS to highlight this important event. The students heard firsthand stories about the experiences of refugees from the local community and even got to learn some traditional dances. It was great to see our young people building their understanding of the other through this experience.

Music-making in Week Two. Even though our Year 4 members were heading to camp, our talented Junior String Ensemble members rocked out with some Seven Nation Army with Mrs Coles, early on Thursday morning!

Don’t forget- if you play a strings instrument at LORDS, ensembles are a great way of strengthening your skills, and sharing the love of music-making with others! Junior ensemble  7:45am Thursday morning; Senior Ensemble 7:45am Tuesday morning !

Thanks to Margaret from Quota Beenleigh Inc for sharing an exciting literacy project with the Junior School at assembly last week. QUOTA together with Rotary has commissioned a local author and illustrator to write a children’s history book about the local Ormeau / Pimpama area. They have also generously donated this book to our library and to all our Year 3 students. Thank you for your generous gift and support! We are so grateful.

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming the Wild Rangers to LORDS as part of the Year 1 Project Based Learning Unit titled ‘Living Things’. The students had an amazing time and were able to meet, touch and hold a range of Australian wildlife, including the Blue-Tongue Lizard, Tawny Frogmouth, Saltwater Crocodile, Ring-Tailed Possum, and the Eastern Carpet Python. The kids had an absolute blast!

Our LORDS Gold Coast Kokoda Teams have finished the challenge. Congratulations to all the students, staff, and support crews for their outstanding effort. Well done everyone and thank you for representing yourselves and the LORDS Community so well. Go Team LORDS!

‘HATS OFF TO READING!’ 

31st July – 4th August is our annual Book Week Celebration at LORDS. 

BOOK FAIR – in the library! Lots of books, activities, posters, and stationery for you to purchase! A percentage of all money spent returns to our library in NEW BOOKS! Families are welcome to come and browse and purchase books!

For this day students are invited to dress as a book character and bring along their book as well. It can be any book character, but we do remind students that their character needs to be appropriate (e.g. not too scary!)

Scholarships

Owing to the Gold Coast Show long weekend, the date for the next round of scholarship testing has been amended to Saturday 26th August.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18th August.

Academic scholarships reward high-level academic achievers going into Years 7 to 12 in 2024. Those seeking an academic scholarship must sit the scholarship testing on Saturday 26th August. The testing is open to both current and future students of LORDS. To apply, please click on this link:

2024 Enrolments

Principal’s Interviews for admission to LORDS in 2024 are well underway. Should you or anyone you know be interested in a LORDS education, please ensure an application is received by our Registrar as soon as possible. This is especially important for families looking to enrol siblings as we may have wait lists for some Year levels. A school tour may also be arranged by phoning the school. On 12th June we held a wonderful celebration of The Arts at the LORDS Winter Soiree. The gifts and talents of our students from the Junior and Secondary schools were beautifully on display through music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Thanks to our staff and family and friends for supporting our young people with their artistic endeavours.

Thanks to the generous support that Friends of LORDS (FOLS) provides to the school. Earlier this year we were able to install new front gates to the school property. The new gates not only look great but also provide increased security to the school both during and after school hours. The gates are currently programmed to open and close before and after the school day, however, they can be locked or unlocked remotely if required, which really enhances the security capabilities of the school. As part of the support to their school, FOLS also provided the school the ability to expand the CCTV camera network, as part of the front entrance upgrade, security cameras have now been placed at the front gate monitoring this major access point to the school. We greatly appreciate the work and contribution that FOLS do within the school community.

Each day children come together for an opening concert where they are introduced to the Bible story, songs, skit and theme for the day! We then break into groups and rotate around some amazingly fun activities! We would LOVE for your family and friends to join us! This isn’t just a LORDS event, so if you have cousins, neighbours, friends that would also like to come along, please invite them! Join us for sport, crafts, bible story, music, cooking and fun, fun, fun!
