Students will start Term 2 on Monday 17th April and finish on Friday 16th June.  

LORDS Easter Worship

Our Easter worship for the end of term will be held at Highway Christian Church on Friday 31st March.

• Year 7-12 will commence at 9.00am
• Prep- Year 6 will commence at 11.30am

Parents and families are more than welcome to attend.

ICAS Testing

Parents from Year 3-12 have received information about the ICAS competition for 2023. This is for any student interested in participating in Digital Technologies, Science, Mathematics and English tests. There is a cost involved for parents. This is not compulsory test. If you would like your child to be involved, then please return the permission slip and payment by Friday 12th May. Contact the school office if you have any further questions.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Junior School Parent/ Teacher interviews will be held on 27th and 29th March (3.30-6.00pm).
Year 7-12 Parent / Teacher interviews will be held on 18th and 19th April (3.30- 6.00pm).

Families in the Junior School can access the schedule via Parent Lounge. Secondary School families will have access to a schedule towards the end of term.

Who said learning has to happen between 4 walls!

Last week our 'Surviving the Adult Jungle' students were fortunate to have the beach as their classroom for the day. The students engaged in a hands-on, practical workshop run by Surf Life Saving Queensland where they learned basic CPR, water safety, and surf survival skills. Who knows when these skills may come in handy for our young people, but one thing is for sure, they are certainly valuable skills to have when living on the Gold Coast!

Did you know Australia is one of the bigger consumers of fast fashion? Have you ever thought about what the real cost is for this cheap clothing? This is what our Year 8/9 Fashion for Change students have been exploring this term. They connected with Kim Pearce from The Possibility Project to learn more about the implications of fast fashion. The students heard about the exploitation of workers (particularly women and children) & the environmental and economic impacts of making this clothing. Armed with this knowledge our students are now using preloved denim items to create and make their very own denim tote bag. We can't wait to see how they turn out! One small step at a time can change the world for the better.

At LORDS we have a strong focus on Service Learning and giving back to the community. That is why it was great for our young people to connect with Tony Sharp from Substation33 to hear about the amazing work they do. Substation33 is a social enterprise that looks at re-engaging marginalised groups back into the workforce, while also trying to solve issues surrounding e-waste and sustainability. Our students had the opportunity to see this work firsthand and will now consider ways how LORDS might contribute to the work that they do. Watch this space!

Last week Year 10 students were visited by Alana and Dylan from Elevate Education for their Study Sensei workshop. Students enjoyed learning some easy, practical tips and tricks for how to study. Alana and Dylan had us all listening, taking notes, and having fun whilst learning how to work smarter, not harder.

Our Year 8/9 'Japanese Teenager' Pathways class enjoyed a Zoom session with Narakawa School in Nagano last week, getting to know a little more about this school and the students that go there. The LORDS students worked in small groups to prepare a short quiz about Australia for the Japanese students, then the students broke off into smaller Zoom groups with the Japanese students. They asked questions about Narakawa School and its students, learning more about what it is like to go to school in Japan. One group even got to see snow from their group’s classroom window! The LORDS students are looking forward to Zooming with Narakawa School again next term!

There have been lots going on in the Junior School in the past 2 weeks. 

We've had the start of NAPLAN for our Year 3 and 5 students, as well as a fun run, a beach safety day, and lots of other engaging classroom activities.

YEAR 2 MATHS

Year 2 have been learning about place value. This week we have been grouping numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones. Lots of hands-on learning happening across Year 2.

YEAR 3 STRINGS

Year 3 strings lessons are so much fun! Ask your child about the family going for a picnic… you might get some interesting responses! 

YEAR 4 CHRISTIAN STUDIES

This week in Christian Studies we have been exploring how God responds when we sin. We examined some bible verses in small groups, made some notes, and then shared them with the class. We used this information to create a brainstorm. We then wrote our own reflections using this information. 

JUNIOR SCHOOL RECREATIONAL SPORT

Junior school Rec sport have been super busy- we created our own talent show for the Prep students, which they loved! We spent last Friday playing ‘Minute to win it’ games- try getting an Oreo in your mouth (from your forehead)  without your hands!  

This week in Year 6 we had Year 7 buddies for the very first time. All the Year 6’s were very excited and nervous about going over to the high school and meeting some Year 7 teachers and Year 7 students. The Year 6’s got a brief introduction into how Year 7 is going before going off in small groups and playing a few get-to-know-you games. This will continue to happen this year as a transition into high school.

As part of our shape unit, Prep students were asked to make something using 2D shapes and 3D objects. They were very creative! Check out what they did below.

Year 6 into Year 7 is a very exciting time for students and their families. 

LORDS will hold its annual Year 7 Sunset Tour on Wednesday 22nd March from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.  We encourage new families to attend private school tours to see how LORDS operates on a normal school day.  We also encourage families to bring along their children so they can see what school life is like at LORDS.

If you are an existing family at LORDS and know of any family or friends who are looking to enrol into Year 7 in 2024, please encourage them to join this tour next week.

Our Year 3 to 6 Junior School Cross Country and Colour Fun Run was a big success. In the morning, students ran 1, 2, and 3km trying to earn their right to represent LORDS at Inter-Lutheran and Zone carnivals in Term 2. Beyond that, the participation levels were fantastic from all students. Congratulations to Albert House who won both the Spirit Trophy and House Shield. Also a big congrats to our Age Champions on the day. After lunch, we transformed our cross country course into a spray of colour. Students had a blast. Check out those smiles

We had an amazing group of swimmers who did LORDS proud last week at the Inter-Lutheran Swimming Carnival. It’s a big step for many of our Year 3 and 4 students who took part in a large inter-school carnival for the first time. Congratulations to our 10 year old boys who took out the top spot in the overall division 2 category. Another big congratulations to all of our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place getters. Great job LORDS.

Our Year 5/6 cohort enjoyed their annual Beach Safety Day at Burleigh Heads last week. Students learned valuable knowledge about beach, ocean, and sun safety as well as CPR. They were able to practice their knowledge in a practical way by performing rescues and learning how to use important equipment such as dolphin boards. The classroom without walls was magnificent!

I was quite taken with the story on television earlier this week about preparations for St Patrick’s Day in the U.S.  They pump a green dye into the Chicago River to remind Americans of their Irish heritage.  The Greenie in me worries about the affect of the dye on the health of the river but, hey, I’ll let it go for now.

Do you have Irish heritage somewhere?  My grandmother on my father’s side was a Mullen, Florence Mullen before she married Bill Johnston.  One can’t get more Irish than that!  A shout out to John Mullen from St Peter’s Lutheran (1984) wherever you are?  A talented man!

When I think of St Patrick’s Day I think of his wonderful prayer, preserved through the centuries and sung by Stuart Townend in recent years.  It begins:

‘Christ be with me, Christ within me
Christ behind me, Christ before me
Christ beside me, Christ to win me
Christ to comfort and restore me…’

In the face of grief, uncertainty and the everyday challenges of life, it is of great comfort to know that God is with us, and with a presence that is loving and supportive.
