Last week, we acknowledged Ash Wednesday. This has become a special way of beginning the forty-day journey (not counting Sundays) to Good Friday and Easter. Jesus comes alongside us, looks at the things which destroy life, and says to us…..COME WITH ME. We follow Christ, as He makes his way toward the Cross, which destroyed His life.

Wearing ashes, we follow Jesus, we discover that He actually comes with us into all those situations, which threaten to rob our life of its value. As we follow Him, we discover how He intends to deal with everything that destroys life. Things like selfishness and hate. Even death itself. Wearing ashes, we believe that there is life beyond death. That is why people come and receive the sign of the cross marked with ashes.

Staffing Update

We welcome to LORDS Mr Lorenzo Giannini who has joined us as our Sports/ Physical Education Teacher Assistant. Lorenzo has experience coaching students from prep- secondary school. I know you will make him feel welcome.

We also welcome Miss Kayli Sas to LORDS who is working as a part-time Science Laboratory Technician in the Secondary School. Kayli has a degree in Applied Mathematics and Chemistry. 

We also wish Pastor Geoff Johnston, his wife Kelly, and their daughter Mia every blessing, as they head back to South Australia at the end of this term. Pastor Geoff has accepted a call to the St Andrews Lutheran Congregation, Glynde (a suburb in Adelaide). We give thanks to Geoff and his family for their service to our community over the past three years. We will have the opportunity to farewell Geoff at the end of this term.

ICAS

Parents from Years 3-12 have received information about the ICAS competition for 2023. This is for any student interested in participating in Digital Technologies, Science, Mathematics, and English tests. There is a cost involved for parents. This is not compulsory test. If you would like your child to be involved, then please return the permission form and money by Friday 12th May. Contact the school office if you have any further questions.

The Arts

Parents are reminded that we have an Arts Co-Curricular Program. Enrolment forms are available on our website https://www.lords.qld.edu.au/co-curricular/performing-arts or at the office. The program includes singing, guitar, strings, woodwind, percussion, keyboard/piano, dance, and visual arts.

This term in our new Passion and Purpose Pathway subject 'Photography for Meaning' students have been learning how to use a DSLR camera to capture effective photographs. They have learned about composition, framing, angles, light, and aperture. Check out the awesome photos Sophie H, Ella S, and Jasmine A took of our students completing some fire safety training. 

Children of the Revolution – Empathy Dive.....

Have you ever wondered what it might have felt like to be a chimney sweep in the 1700s? A scavenger in the dangerous and noisy cotton mills in Industrial England? A turnip picker in the fields? Today some of our Year 9 students had the opportunity to experience these child labour roles as part of their study of the Industrial Revolution.
Students stepped back in time to smoggy Manchester, circa 1778 where they immersed themselves in activities such as trying on a chimney for size, picking up cotton on the factory floor, and hauling coal through a dark, dusty shaft of a coal mine. Through a combination of hands-on activities, source analysis, and reflective writing, students not only learned about the roles of children as workers during Britain’s industrial age, but they also empathised with a generation of children whose childhoods were deeply impacted by the pursuit of productivity and industry. Learning with heads, hearts, and hands at LORDS.

Year 10 Geography students were blessed with beautiful weather as they headed to the coast to study the impact of beach erosion upon Kirra Beach and evaluate the current and future management strategies. The students enjoyed seeing the coastal features and processes they have been studying in action.

It's so wonderful to showcase and celebrate the high-quality learning that is happening in our classrooms. Our students are a very talented group of young people. We hope you enjoy their virtual Art Gallery.

It is great to see our students learning real skills that they can use in their everyday lives. 

That is why our 'Surviving the Adult Jungle' pathway subject has been such a roaring success! Recently the students learned all about fire safety and under the supervision of a trained professional, were taught how to effectively use an extinguisher to put out a real fire. One of our students reflected on their learning in this subject by saying 'I love getting to do more hands-on learning and learning about things we will need to know later in life'.

What a fantastic Year 7 Camp at Luther Heights! We left the rain behind us and three activity groups had a day at the beach, working as teams to complete a series of challenges. The most difficult was filling a bucket with water as quickly as possible so that the ball would spill over the top. Did we mention the bucket was full of holes??? Our other groups enjoyed the Mohawk Walk and Ropes Challenge Course, finishing up their day on the Flying Fox! After a delicious dinner, teams battled the LORDS Trivia Spectacular - complete with Dance Off, Cookie Face challenge, and Clinker race.

Day 2 at the Year 7 Camp....Team challenge was the name of all the games today! The students worked together to complete challenges involving high ropes, low ropes, tall trees, catapults, and crates that needed to be stacked. Mrs Kinne and our Year 12 Captains paid a visit, providing great encouragement and unlimited uno games! 

Everyone had a great time, and made new friends and new memories!

Meet Luke. Luke is one of our 2023 "TAFE at School" participants. Luke attends TAFE each Friday to study toward a Certificate III in Design Fundamentals. Luke has been diving deep into Adobe Illustrator, learning a great deal about the use of colour, and is currently working on designing stickers for a local Gold Coast Theme Park. The program allows Luke the opportunity to engage with various industries; helping him realize the wide scope of work that his interest in digital art and animation will lead to after high school. Congratulations Luke, for stepping out and working toward your future goals.

It's also important to note that the TAFE at School program fits in with existing high school studies and will generally replace one senior schooling subject. Certificate III or higher level qualifications completed while at school will contribute to a student's Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). After investigating how engineers plan, design, and build structures to ensure they can withstand natural disasters our Year 8/9 Disaster Proof students were busy prototyping their very own design. Last week they tested out how different materials impact the strength of a wall. Over the next few weeks, they will be applying what they have learned from both their theory and practical lessons to plan, design and make their very own disaster-proof house! They will have to justify their design ideas and the types of materials used. It's so great to see our young people so excited and engaged in their learning!

As part of the Year 5 empathy dive, this week they used assistive devices such as crutches, wheelchairs moon boots to experience what it might be like to have a temporary or permanent disability. Students were asked to play games as they normally would and reflect on the challenges it presents. Discussions were had about how teams were picked and the terms participation vs inclusion. How might we include someone who is less abled than we are? Following our inclusive games which focused on physical disabilities, our students were immersed in a sensory overload. This better helped students to understand what it might be like for someone who has a disability that cannot be seen. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is how we develop empathy. How might we support and respect people who are different from us?

As part of our Year 4 Project Based Learning unit, "First People's", Year 4 enjoyed a visit from Uncle Boomerang. He taught us about Indigenous history and culture. Students enjoyed exploring Aboriginal artifacts, tools, and animals, as well as learning about traditional games. We listened to dreamtime stories and began to understand the messages in them. We look forward to writing and illustrating our own stories, using the storytelling and art techniques Uncle Boomerang taught us.

Our youngest learners here at LORDS are in our Kindergarten; LORDS Little Wonders. They have been so busy since the start of 2023 and have now sent us some photos of their activities to share with you. What a happy group of eager LORDS Learners!

Last week our Year 1 students (or History detectives!) visited Beenleigh Historical Village and took a step back in time to explore and make connections with changes that have occurred over the past 150 years.

Some of the fantastic activities included visiting the school and experiencing what it was like as a student in the late 1800s, trying their hand at the two-man crosscut saw, learning all about fire engines in the 1950s, and having a go at washing garments as they did in the early 1900s. It was such an amazing experience for our little history detectives, and we can’t wait to continue to explore all of the incredible changes that have shaped our lives today. A huge thank you to our parent volunteers who gave up their time to assist staff, it’s very much appreciated!

The Year 2 students have been using their photography skills to take photos around the school. Today they found patterns and uploaded them to Seesaw. This is part of their Media Arts unit. What great little budding photographers!

Year 3 started preparing their gardens because they have waited for the hot days to pass. The children dug up the weeds, loosened the existing soil, and added new soil ready for planting. The next step will be to plant seeds in containers and take them home to nurture and grow! When they are ready the students will bring them back to plant in their gardens.  In the meantime, they will be planting seeds to see how long certain plants take to reach up through the ground, such as beetroot, beans, and zucchini. They are excited about this new Year 3 adventure.  We would like to thank Ms Smith for organising the donated bags of eco-potting mix from Rocky Point.  It will certainly help our plants grow!

We love seeing our LORDS students out and getting active on the weekends. Recently a number of LORDS students competed in the GC Pink Triathlon.  For many students, it was their first triathlon.

In late February we sent a strong team of swimmers to the Pacific District Swim meet. All participants gave their best in the pool and we had some fantastic results.  Congratulations to the following students who qualified for Regionals:

Another year of Kokoda officially began on 19th February with our 48km and 96km teams hitting the trails. This year we will have 16 teams participating in the 18km, 30km, 48km, and 96km events. Go get 'em teams!

Imagination is a big driver in education and faith is a big driver in one’s spiritual life.  Are they related in any sense at all?  I think they are since both imagination and faith involve an unknown future, a step into the dark.  What guides us, however, is vision.

I loved Australian Story on the ABC this last Monday night on ‘Rewiring Australia.’  This is the brain-child, the vision of Dr Saul Griffiths who lives with his partner and two children in Wollongong, south of Sydney.  He hopes to electrify the nation, moving from fossil fuels to renewables with the aim of reducing emissions and the threat of climate change.  His imagination and that of his team continue to drive them forward.  A book on Montessori education principles contains the quote, ‘Imagination is the mind’s ability to see something that is not right in front of you.’

On the Faith side, Genesis 12 records Abraham and Sarah stepping out with the call of God upon their lives.  With God’s call, they had a vision of a new life in a land of promise.

May our lives be fuelled with imagination and faith.  Imagination and faith draw us forward, forecasting in our lives what God can do.
