Next week we acknowledge Reconciliation Week and pray that as a nation, indigenous and non-indigenous people can continue to heal, learn and grow together.

Almighty and loving God, you who created ALL people in your image, lead us to seek your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past.

You gave your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven. We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced. We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness.

Heal the hearts of the broken, homeless, and afflicted and fill their spirits. In your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable.

Lord, you are our hope. Amen.

National Council of Churches in Australia (NATSIEC)

This week we have shifted our student's thinking to the future.  We have encouraged them to consider what the world and work will look like when they complete school or higher education.  On Wednesday afternoon, all Year 9 and 10 spent some time listening to some wise Year 11 and 12 students who were prepared to share their insights into the transition into the Senior Phase of Learning and exploring their options for future study pathways.  During the evening, parents and students together came along to learn, ask questions, and ponder what the future might be.  Thank you to our dedicated teachers, TAFE, and Griffith University for facilitating these conversations. Our message to the students was to discover what they are passionate about and chase their passion pathway.

In response to some requests last night we have created a Pathways Page on TEAMS, where we will post any information that might be relevant to students’ pathways.  Students are encouraged to join this page to stay up to date – search for Pathways and click join.

A magical afternoon was hosted by our Year 11 Hospitality students last week. The students prepared and served a spectacular high tea with delicious treats for our staff. Congratulations to Year 11 on a job well done! The smiles on the guest's faces show how much they enjoyed this beautiful afternoon tea.

Year 12 Hospitality students held a cultural food stall on Wednesday, showcasing their skills and learning in their unit Cultural Diversity in Hospitality. On sale were French, Japanese, and Mexican foods.  200 portions of mains, 200 portions of sweets, and 200 drinks is a lot for a group of 17 students to prepare and we are so very proud of how hard they worked and what they achieved. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all.  Congratulations to Year 12 Hospitality on a very successful event!!

Last week our Year 11 Psychology students participated in LIVIN  (LIVINWell mental health education and stigma reduction workshop) The workshop aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health and promote positive mental health in the community. 

It was unusual, and more than a little bit smelly, but so much fun! Last week Year 7 students completed a squid dissection and anatomical drawing as part of their biology unit. They were able to identify the various bodily features of the squid and extract the lens of the eye, the tentacles, and the ‘beak’. We were so impressed with our students’ amazing scientific sketching skills and their ability to use safe practices in the lab. Their curiosity and inquiry skills were brilliant!

On Thursday, 19 May, four Year 7 and four Year 8 students went to a Young Leaders Conference at Robina, organized and facilitated by BOP Industries.

The day started with some warm-up activities to get the students excited and ready for the challenges ahead.

In the first session, they reflected on the spaces they use to connect, collaborate and learn daily, and they had to consider how they could redesign these spaces to keep up with society’s needs. Their redesigning for the community focused on technology, sustainability, and user-centred design. 

In the session after morning tea, the students looked at quirky innovations worldwide and then had to create similar solutions for challenges that communities on the Gold Coast have faced.

In the last session, the students explored how we can inform and attract communities to integrated facilities. The students created different ideas for an app, website, and digital media campaign. They expressed their thoughts on paper and then presented their ideas to students from other schools also participating in the event.

It was a great opportunity for the LORDS students to share their ideas and pitch solutions to real-life problems facing our communities today.

Our Book Parade was nothing short of amazing this week! So many creative and fun costumes! We hope you enjoy looking at all our students and staff having a great time on Wednesday. Can you match the costumes to the books?

It has been our pleasure to have author Candice Lemon-Scott visit with us today! It has been lovely to learn about writing our own books, how to be inspired to write, and about our Australian wildlife. All classes Prep – Year 6 enjoyed a workshop session today! Candice is the author of Jake in Space and the Eco Rangers series plus many more. 

Connection is such a powerful thing! So great to see the relationships between our Living Historians and the Year 1 students blossom over the course of their Project-Based Learning unit of work as they learn about the past and each other. It has proved to be such a special learning opportunity for both our Living Historians and our Year 1 students.

On Friday 20th May, the Year 2 students went on an excursion to Hinze Dam to learn more about the history of this significant place.  They had fun walking along the dam wall playing ‘eye spy’ to look for four key features of the dam.  When they went to the spillway, they were blown away by the roar and the amount of water flowing over the dam wall.  At Picnic Parkland they enjoyed the water mission and the water testing activity.

The best way to celebrate a love of reading is…. a reading competition. On Tuesday night, these five ladies represented LORDS at this year’s annual Reader’s Cup competition. The girls have been studying 5 novels over the past 8 weeks in preparation for the competition. They finished a very respectable 15th out of 27 very competitive schools. Well done girls. We are very proud of your efforts.

Mrs Haywood visited 4B this week to help us ideate some solutions to the problem, "how might we keep Indigenous culture alive at LORDS?" Students had fun doing crazy 8's to generate ideas. We're looking forward to evaluating our ideas and choosing the best solutions, which we'll put into practice. Thank you, Mrs Haywood. Watch this space.... 

This year we are very excited to be having our Year 3 connect experience. This will be held on Friday 3rd June. The theme for the sleep out is Homelessness. As you are aware the students are learning about this concept during their Project Based Learning unit this semester. Please log into Parent Portal to approve your child’s attendance. Please visit Seesaw to read a social story about this event.

All students will go home after school and will need to return to school at 4.30pm. The evening will be run by St Vincent De Paul who will present information and facilitate group activities about homelessness. We will also be assisted on the night by LORDS teaching staff.

There were some special moments in the Junior School assembly last week.  And Happy Birthday Scott!  The Year 5 students taught us the difference between hearing and listening.  We were encouraged to pause and listen for the sounds around us.

This dovetailed nicely with this morning’s Staff Devotion.  ‘Waiting on the Lord’ is a type of active listening in terms of faith.  We learn to ‘hear’ as we pause in prayer.  Prayer is much more than asking things from God; it is attentive listening, waiting on him and his Spirit.  

Psalm 130: 5,6   ‘I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.’

In practical terms, waiting on the Lord is taking a pause, a reflective moment, before acting.  It is a way of honouring God, especially the Holy Spirit, ever-present, always near.

Take a moment today to wait on the Lord.
