Gifts of Grace

Hopefully, families have received a copy of the ‘Gifts of Grace’ Catalogue from ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service). This is a great opportunity to support people in developing countries around the world.

End of Year Celebrations

Our final assemblies will be held on the following days:

We will be presenting end of semester awards at these assemblies. Families will be notified if their child will be receiving an award.

Class parties will be held on the last day of school (Friday 2nd  December). Teachers will contact parents and caregivers in the near future about these celebrations. A reminder that the last day of school is compulsory for all students.

On Friday last week, the Year 9 students celebrated the end of their Middle schooling with their annual Dinner Dance. A wonderful night of food, dancing, games, and laughter was had. Thank you to all the families and staff who have supported our Year 9 students in their journey. Bring on Senior school!

Our Year 11 Hospitality students have been exploring Food Trends and were proud to provide an ‘uber-eats style’ Asian fusion meal for families on Tuesday. We’ve trialled many dishes, and finally settled on a 3-course meal which we prepared for 91 people. What a mammoth effort! It was excellent to see students stepping up and experiencing a taste of the hospitality industry for themselves. The food was delicious, and we are proud of what was achieved. Congratulations Year 11 on a fantastic event!

Last week, Year 8 & 9 Textiles students had a visit from Kathryn, Mr Clooney & Bean from the Animal Welfare League Queensland We have begun a unit called ‘Purr-fect Op-paw-tunity’ and students were keen to understand the realities of life for animals in shelters. Kathryn spoke about the work of AWL and Mr Clooney & Bean showed us some of the tricks they have learned on their journey from shelter animals to search & rescue dogs. We will now work over the coming weeks to create items that will help improve the quality of life for animals at the AWL. Lots of tug toys, snuffle mats, cuddle friends, snuggle cups, tunnels, and interactive mats coming right up!!

On Wednesday 26th October, our Year 12 Hospitality students hosted their final event at LORDS.  Parents were invited to join us for a Mediterranean degustation, with students serving 8 small courses designed to take our guests on a culinary journey.  What a success it was!  The meals were delicious, the service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was delightful.  We are so very proud of what these students have achieved, and it was the perfect end to their study of Hospitality at LORDS.  Special thanks to Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Lee, and Mrs Macdonald for supporting and mentoring students this year.  Congratulations Year 12 Hospitality on a wonderful event!

This year we have started the bell tradition when students finish their last assessment. We have had a flurry of excited Year 12 students as they got to ring the bell!

At LORDS we try and develop empathic young people who understand the needs of others. 

Empathy can sometimes be described as stepping into the shoes of the other. And that is exactly what our Prep students did when Vinnies Australia came to visit. They stepped into the shoes of a child that they didn't know and heard about their lives. What a powerful way to learn more about the experiences of others. 

Year 1 visited St Peters Alberton on an excursion on 2nd November as part of their Christian Studies Unit, ‘Features of the Church’. They had a wonderful time learning about the features of the church, the church community, Bible stories, and prayer with some hands-on craft activities. They also considered their Science Unit, ‘Light and Sound’, and identified light and sound sources in the church, including the church bell, stained glass windows, candles, and the organ. Thank you to Mrs. Ludcke for all her hard work preparing for their excursion!

As part of our Year 6’s Project Based Learning unit, our students engaged in an information session about refugee and asylum-seeking experiences through Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma. 

Eddie and Nargis from QPASTT shared their real-life refugee stories with the students. Their stories helped our students gain a better understanding of the harsh conditions refugees face and how we can support, accept and respect refugees living in Australia. We love the empathy that our students have been able to gain from this experience. 

This semester our Year 4 students have been learning about food waste and exploring ways that they might help tackle this issue. They have decided to create a LORDS recipe book with recipes that have common food items which are often thrown away. As part of this process, they heard from a food photographer who shared some top tips about photographing food. 

When we asked some of the students what they had learned this was their response:

Harrison -  ' You have to think about angles when taking the photo. For example, you can take it from the diner's viewpoint.'

Louie -  ' I'm taking my photograph from a bird's eye view because foods that are flat look better from this angle. '

The recipe books will be sold at our FOLS Christmas Markets.

Congratulations to the students who have been involved in the APSMO Maths Olympiads and Explorer Programs this year. These students participated in weekly sessions to develop their mathematical problem-solving skills over the course of Terms 2 and 3. They put their skills to the test in 5 contests over this time. Well done also to the award recipients as part of these 2 programs celebrated on assembly last week!

Next Wednesday 16th November, Year 3 and 5 will be holding their annual Marketplace. Please join them from 1.45pm for some great shopping ready for Christmas. All proceeds donated to ALWS and Lutheran Drought Aid.

Year 8 had a fabulous afternoon at Top Golf last week.

This week Year 11 played Dodge Bow down on our oval.

Year 11 students enjoyed a leisurely walk along The Spit. What a great way to finish off their first week back after exams. 

Year 6 enjoyed a surfing workshop at Currumbin Beach last week. They learned about beach safety, tides, rips, and how to read the ocean. They also learned how to stand up on a board and catch a wave by themselves. Well done Year 6 on a great effort in the surf!

Are you a casual observer of societal trends?  I love it, to be honest.  When I heard that Clementine Ford (‘Fight like a Girl’) and Libby O’Donovan were combining to present ‘A Love Sermon’ my interest was piqued.

The blurb, ‘a secular sermon on matters of the heart, unrequited love, deep friendship, motherhood, self-love.’  Sounds like a very engaging and thought-provoking night.  I’m sure a language warning will be in place.

In my prep for Reformation Day celebrations, I read how Reformer John Calvin (16th C), got upset with one of his pastors, Sebastian Castello, for suggesting Song of Songs might be a poem about erotic love (modern scholarship would have no issue with that).  Hmmm…  maybe the church and society can find areas of overlap, where we begin to listen to each other and engage human and heartfelt needs.  A ‘secular sermon’ might be a suitable invitation for that, especially on those universal themes.
