Thank you for creation itself and the incredible gifts and talents you so generously entrust to us. May we appreciate and develop these talents, always recognising that they come from you and remain yours.
Guide us in using them for the benefit of everyone that we encounter, so that they may be more aware of your creative presence and develop the creativity entrusted to them for the good of others.
Help us also to use your talents to bring a creative spark and new possibilities to your world, living out our call to be an integral part of your creative force. Amen.

We welcome new students and families to LORDS this term and hope that your time with us will be a blessing. 

LORDS Celebrates

As communicated in the end of term letter sent to all families during the holidays, we have made come changes to the timing of LORDS Celebrates for 2022. We hope that this gives families enough notice to ensure that you can attend. As our school continues to grow and change, we are looking for opportunities to involve students and families.

The Junior School LORDS Celebrates will be held on Tuesday 22nd November starting at 1.30pm at Highway Christian Church. All students from Year 4-6 will be attending this event. It will be a celebration of our Year 6 students completing primary school, alongside the awards also given at LORDS Celebrates. We will also have the opportunity to celebrate the fine work happening in the Junior School with sections of Wakakirri being performed along with choir and our strings ensemble.

 
Due to Year 12 external exams, the Secondary School LORDS Celebrates will be held on Wednesday 16th November at 6.30pm at The Dream Centre, Carrara (near Metricon). All students from Year 7-12 are expected to attend this important event as we farewell our Seniors of 2022, celebrate award recipients for the year, and enjoy some of the outstanding work from our Secondary School including a performance from the cast of our musical We Will Rock You.
Further information about these occasions will be sent home shortly. We thank you in advance for your support of these important school events.

Congratulations to all the staff and students involved in our Arts Spring Soiree last night. It was a delight to see how our Arts Program has grown and developed throughout this year. Special thanks to Mr Days, Mrs Vezos, and all our co-curricular arts teachers for their terrific organization of this special event.

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM

Students interested in the hospitality and tourism industry are invited to attend an information evening and hear from industry leaders regarding casual holiday employment and school-based traineeship opportunities available on the Gold Coast. Our LORDS Pathways Coordinator will be attending the information session. The evening is for parents and students. Please see the attached flyer for more information and to register your interest.

HEALTH SUPPORT SERVICES

Commencing February 2023, TAFE Queensland and Metro South Hospital and Health Service (Princess Alexandra Hospital) are excited to offer selected Year 11 and Year 12 students the opportunity to study a Certificate II in Health Support Services (HLT23215) while still in high school.  This course provides an opportunity to gain skills in a variety of health care operations, including food services assistant, wards-person (transporting patients), and environmental services officer (housekeeping).

One of the Formal Committee students; Mikaela C, has written a message on behalf of the Year 12 students about their big night:

What a night to remember! Movie World hosted a great night complete with amazing service, decorations, and food. The workers at Movie World were wonderful and made the night what it was. The staff did a wonderful job organising and getting everything ready for the night. The speeches presented to the Year 12 cohort throughout the night made it that much more memorable. The teachers who were there showing support and love were deeply appreciated by all the Year 12 students. Having them there celebrating with us truly meant a lot. 

The night was filled with love and laughter and resulted in an overall great night. The dancing and photos of us all dressed up together were magical and we couldn’t have asked for a better night. Having the chance to get all glammed up with our peers was so special. The night was filled with conversations, reminiscing, and past memories. We each walked away from the night equipped with a whole new set of wonderful memories. Thank you to the staff, Movie World, and the amazing Year 12 cohort for making the night beautiful.

On Tuesday last week, Year 9 walked the city of Brisbane to gain an understanding of its layout and how those experiencing homelessness are impacted. We took a ride on the CityCat and heard from our friends at Vinnies about what it is like to experience homelessness in Brisbane. We had a chance to reflect on what it might feel like to be in the public eye and bought our dinners with only $2.

Day 2: Our Vinnies facilitators led us in some activities that strengthened our empathy through stories from those experiencing homelessness. In the afternoon we headed out for an afternoon at Southbank with some swimming, time with friends, and a BBQ dinner.

Day 3: Saw us wrap up our learnings with St Vinnies by debriefing what we had seen and heard this week, questions we had, and how our views have changed. In the afternoon we embarked on a South Bank Scavenger hunt to find all sorts of weird and wonderful things along the river.

Friday: We headed back to school to share our understanding and brainstorm ways we can serve those in need in our community.

Congratulations to Kolbe E for his artwork being included in the Energies Exhibition at HOTA. Only 23 student artworks from across all high schools on the Gold Coast were chosen. This is a fine achievement and is a terrific reflection of the quality of the teaching and Arts Program at LORDS. Well done, Kolbe. The exhibition was on throughout the September holidays.

A group of LORDS students across Years 7, 8, and 10 were invited to participate in the Young Entrepreneur Summit (YES) at Cleveland last term. YES is a one-day, interactive summit specially designed to help young people develop the skills and mindset they need to become entrepreneurs, innovators, creatives, engineers, scientists, and small business owners. 

Our students had the opportunity to hear from a variety of motivational and innovative young men and women and how they began their entrepreneurial journeys inspiring our students to chase their dreams. We were also fortunate enough to speak and gain insight from chief entrepreneurs Steve Baxter from Sharktank series and KPMG (major accounting firm) chairman Micheal Hiller. Students then had a chance to think about problems in our community that they want to solve and then pitch their business ideas to the wider audience. 

It was a magnificent day and our students of LORDS came away from it all with new soft skills to utilize and passion to make a difference.

In Semester One our Year 4 students explored the question 'How might we keep Indigenous language and culture alive at LORDS'. They came up with the idea of creating a new sports t-shirt that would have an indigenous design on it and also distinguish which house each of our students is in. Yesterday we had Selwyn a graphic artist and proud Bundjalung man from AKL Industries, come in so that he could listen to the students' fantastic ideas about the new shirt. Selwyn is now going to use these ideas to create some prototypes for the new LORDS sports t-shirt. The students will then provide feedback and choose a design for the shirt. We can't wait to see the final product!

As part of the transition to their high school program, our Year 6 students have the opportunity to taste test some of the rotation subjects they will engage with in high school. This term they will become familiar with our hospitality kitchen while cooking foods from around the globe. They cooked pizza and garlic bread for their first session. Bon Appetit! 

Our Year 6 students also had the opportunity to build relationships with some of our secondary teaching staff in the Technology faculty. They built some fabulous kites in Design Technology. It was amazing to see the burst of beautiful colours on our oval!

This morning our Year 6 students invited the community to our first-ever Human Library. Over the past term, they have explored the experiences of refugees by listening to the stories of our guest speakers, reading a range of texts, and engaging in a variety of activities that build empathy and understanding about this topic. Today the students stepped into the shoes of the other to take on the persona of a refugee and shared their stories. It was a very powerful thing and a testament to the depth of the learning that has taken place. They also planned, wrote, and published their very own story explaining some of the challenges and triumphs that a refugee might experience. Thank you to our generous community who donated money to purchase these books. All money raised will be donated to support ALWS in the amazing work they do supporting refugee families.

FURTHER NEWS!!

A huge shout out to our Year 6 cohort who made a whopping $622 from the sale of their books at the Human Library event. This money will be donated to Australian Lutheran World Service to support the work they do alongside refugees and will provide school sets, emergency food, and dignity kids to refugee families.

Thank you to all the LORDS families and friends who supported this initiative. 

Year 4 Public Speakers attended the GC School's Speaking Event on 8th September 2022. They were well-rehearsed and confident in their abilities to be Effective Communicators. Mrs Voorhoeve had prepared the students well and we have been delighted with their progress. Well done to Ava H, Violet C, Japi S, Louie M, Aria C, and Cara O for their participation and enthusiasm last term.

It was wonderful to have our Year 1 families come into classrooms to share in the wonderful learning that has been happening in Year 1 during Term 3. The students shared their animal dioramas, information reports, and concertinas to show how the environment has changed over time and to hear how they might help protect and care for the environment in the future. 

Students from our Year 6 class have recently returned from the LORDS tour of Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
 
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist our families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. We are grateful for this contribution.

During the school holidays, some of our LORDS students represented Queensland at the National Futsal Championships.  Congratulations to:

Dawson S, Jesse P, Daly K, Quinn C, Tannim K, Frank O, and Mason S

This is an amazing achievement for our young athletes to be representing at this level.  

There were some great accomplishments as well:

• Congrats to Jesse's U8s who won the national title. Jesse also scored the winning goal in golden goal in the final which we are sure he will never forget. 
• Tannim and Frank were runners-up in the U11s.
• The U9 boys finished on top of their pool group.

• Congrats as well to Dawson, Mason, and Daly who received invitations to represent Australia in Fiji in the U10/U11 category next year.

On Tuesday LORDS welcomed 5 other Lutheran schools for the Lutheran Futsal Championships.  It was a great day with over 200 students across 6 schools all participating and having fun and showing that Lutheran spirit.  Congratulations to our 5/6 Girls team who came runners up in their division and to our 3/4 Boys A Team who were grand final champions. What a day!

Year 7 – 11 sport has kicked off with a bang with students participating in different activities every week.  Activities include bowling, walking, Top Golf, lawn bowls, and in a LORDS first DODGEBOW!  Our Year 7s were the first ones to participate in Dodgebow last week and it was a blast.  Imagine laser tag meets paintball but with a bow and arrow.  Check it out.

It’s been quite the cricketing journey for this young man.  For the past three years, Aidan Steinhardt has trialed for the Pacific District Cricket Team and just missed out on making the team.  This year, Aidan made the final roster and will now represent the South Coast at Regionals in Rockhampton early next term. This achievement is due to Aidan’s dedication, commitment, and passion for the sport.  We wish him all the best in what will no doubt be an amazing experience for him.  Good luck Aidan! 

Congratulations to our Year 7 and Year 9 Mixed Netball Teams who are Grand Final champions in our AGCC Competition.  Our Year 7 team went undefeated all term while our Year 9 team won in dramatic fashion, winning their Grand Final game 22-21 in extra time.  Well done to all students, as well as Mrs S and Mrs J.  Fantastic effort!

In Term 3 during sport time, Senior School participated in “Play for your house.” Students played varying games to collect house points and we even had the inaugural house challenge spelling bee! At the end of all events, it was Pimpama who won the day with a score of 1920 points.

Pimpama: 1920

As we move towards the end of the year, less than 100 points separate our 3 houses in our overall tally. Who will take at house champion in 2022?

One would think these were words from an Esau, heading ‘East of Eden’ or a Jacob doing time in Laban’s service, but here God is speaking.  God is saying to David that nothing was lost while he journeyed with these semi-nomadic people, through the desert, through thick and thin.

The Bible challenges and liberates our thoughts if we care to hear a different voice; if we care to take a different strand of the Tradition as we weave the Story.

This different voice and strand are the nomadic, on-the-move God tenting with his people.

Those in our communities affected by homelessness or housing insecurity may well draw strength from this God who is nonetheless, tenting with them.  Yes, a temple was built by Solomon,  something pretty solid at that, but the church will always be a pilgrim people.

Blessings as we pilgrim through the new term, the Lord at our side.
